NEW YORK (WABC) -- With just over a week to go, on Saturday the Puerto Rican Day Parade crowned the prince and princess who will represent them in the parade next Sunday.

As part of the 'Rising Star Challenge', students competed to not only be featured in the big event, but also get a $1,000 scholarship.

The parade awards 60 scholarships to exceptional students who are of Puerto Rican descent.

"This event has been amazing, it really shows the community how much we worth, and how our education can make us go places that we need to go, and the places that we want to be," said Chelsea Garcia.
