Entertainment reporter Sandy Kenyon has more on the new show.

A new heroine is being added to the family of Disney princesses.

Elena of Avalor is Disney's first Latina princess, and she is poised to make history Friday when her new series debuts on The Disney Channel.

Her story begins when she rescues her kingdom from an evil sorceress, but that's not what makes this new show so unique.

The princess, voiced by Aimee Carrero, is tasked with leading her country even though she is only 16. And while she has the help of family and friends, she also has a lot to learn before she can become queen.

"Elena will be a strong role model because she is going through something that everybody can relate to," Carrero said. "Which is, how do I go from a child in my parents' home to being my own person?"

The show is geared towards children ages 2-11 and their families.
