Man arrested in Washington Heights fatal shooting after victim chases gunman down

Man fatally shot, bystander also shot chases down suspect

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (WABC) -- An innocent bystander, wounded by a bullet, chased after the gunman police said was responsible for the fatal shooting of another man.

Corvell Hampton, 28, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.

Around 1 p.m. Monday, the 31-year-old bystander saw the shooter murder another man in Highbridge Park, according to the New York City Police Department.

That man, a 36-year-old man, was fatally shot in the head.

The bystander was hit in the shoulder, but according to police, flagged down an officer who arrested the suspect.

Police in white protective suits gathered evidence near the scene at West 165th Street and Edgecomb Avenue in Washington Heights Monday evening.

The man shot in the shoulder was taken to Lincoln Hospital.

There is no word yet on the motive for the shootings.
