UNIONDALE, Long Island (WABC) -- A 16-year-old man was shot on a residential Uniondale street, just off the Hofstra University campus Tuesday night.

The victim is in critical condition after he was found wounded in the head on Fenimore Avenue just before 11:30 p.m., then rushed to an area hospital in unknown condition.

He is in "very, very serious condition at an unknown hospital," said Nassau Police Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun.

The shooting was in a residential neighborhood just south of the Hofstra University campus. The victim does not appear to be connected with Hofstra.

Police said there was a dispute with the victim and two men. At least one of the men fired a gun, then the two men, between 16 and 18 years old, fled the scene, possibly on bicycles. No arrests were immediately made.

No weapon has been recovered at the scene and the motive is uncertain. Police said there were witnesses who they are speaking with now.

The university notified students via text alert, urging them to call 911 with any information. Hofstra security has intensified campus patrols, but there is no evidence that the suspects are on campus.

Lebrun said the gang investigation squad is looking into the street.
