2 hit and killed by Long Island Rail Road train

LIRR train hits 2 people, delays trains

HOLLIS, N.Y. (WABC) -- Long Island Rail Road trains were back on schedule Thursday morning after two people were struck and killed on the tracks in Queens overnight.

The victims, a man and woman, both 29, were pronounced dead on the tracks, near the Hollis station, at about 3 a.m. Thursday. They were found under the train about 200 feet east of the station, and were pronounced dead at the scene. The 1:46 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma, which was due at Penn Station at 3:05 a.m.

As of 5:30 a.m., the police investigation at the Hollis station was complete.

The medical examiner removed the bodies. No criminality is suspected in the deaths, which are under investigation.

The Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay and Hempstead branches had 20- to 30-minute delays, and westbound service for Queens Village and Hollis was suspended. Trains were back to normal around 8 a.m.

There were hundreds of passengers were on the train at the time. No passengers on the train that hit the two were injured and they were transferred to another train.

LIRR service was delayed 20 to 30 minutes during the morning commute because one track was out of service for the investigation.

The Hollis station was the scene of a 2013 suicide, where a man and woman in their 20s also lost their lives. Davon Smallwood, 25, and Ariana O'Neal, 21, both of Queens Village, died after jumping in front of a train in 2013.
