Taxi driver only grazed in attempted robbery

Police are looking for three men after the attempted robbery of a cab driver on Long Island late Thursday.

Authorities say a Lindy's Taxi driver was picking up a fare around 10:30 p.m. on Meade Avenue in North Bellport when a shot was fired, shattering the driver's side window.

According to Suffolk County Police, a man had just gotten into a pre-ordered taxi when three other men walked up to the vehicle. One of those men had a gun and demanded cash from the driver.

The driver struggled with the man for the gun, while the fare fled and called 911.

The taxi driver tried to drive away, and a shot was fired into the vehicle.

The driver went to a nearby 7-Eleven on Montauk Highway and Kane Avenue, where he dialed 911. The driver had a minor graze wound to the abdomen, but he did not require medical attention.

All three of the suspects fled northbound. No arrests were immediately made.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call (631) 854-8552 or 1-800-220-TIPS.
