Boil water advisory lifted after water main break in Millburn, N.J.

MILLBURN, N.J. (WABC) -- A boil water advisory in Irvington, Maplewood and Millburn after a water main break in Millburn has now been lifted.

New Jersey American Water issued the advisory following the 24-inch water main break Friday night along Glen Avenue.

The company says the repairs have been completed and subsequent water quality testing shows the water quality to be safe.

But customers were advised to take the following measures:

Run your water faucets for 3-5 minutes to flush your service connection and interior plumbing with water from the service main.

Empty and clean your automatic ice makers and water chillers.

Drain and refill your hot water heater if the temperature is set below 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Service connections with a water softener/cartridge filters should be run through a regeneration cycle or other procedures recommended by the manufacturer.

At least six homes in Millburn were evacuated Friday night after the break at about 10:30 p.m. behind 140 Glen Ave., a residential home.

The main is near the New Jersey Transit Millburn train station, where train traffic was stopped Friday for safety reasons. New Jersey American Water said that the advisory was "a standard precaution ... taken whenever there is loss of pressure in our water mains."
