CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A ceremony was held Friday outside the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn marking 10 years since the death of NYPD Officer Russel Timoshenko.

Timoshenko, 23, was shot in the face on July 9, 2007, during a traffic stop of a stolen vehicle. He died five days later.

His partner, Officer Herman Yan, was also shot. He was saved by his ballistic vest and was able to return fire.

Since the weapons used were all illegally obtained handguns, the case prompted renewed efforts to stop the flow of illegal guns.

Two men were convicted in Timoshenko's death, and a third on charges of weapons possession.

Recently, nearly 6,000 people signed a petition to name a new Staten Island Ferry boat after Timoshenko, who had lived on Staten Island.
