LEVITTOWN, N.Y. (WABC) -- A Long Island woman is dead after an unattended candle sparked a blaze that tore through her Long Island home.

The fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday in Levittown. Nassau County Fire Marshal James Hickman told Newsday that the woman's son tried to rescue her, but was driven back by the flames.

Hickman says the man made a "valiant effort to save his mother." He was treated at a hospital and released.

Firefighters found the woman in a back bedroom. Hickman said she was mostly bedridden. Investigators haven't released the victim's name.

It's unclear how the candle ignited the blaze.

Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
