NEWARK (WABC) -- The crews of four commercial flights reported seeing what appeared to be a drone operating near the final approach path to Runway 4 Right at Newark Airport around noon on Sunday.
The FAA released a statement saying the aircrafts were at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 feet and were eight to 13 miles from Newark Airport when they saw the drone. At one point, a warning was sent out to all pilots.
According to the FAA, the flights were ExpressJet 3267, an Embraer E145; Northwest Airlink 5837, an Embraer E170; United Airlines 107, a Boeing 767; and United Airlines 1210, a Boeing 737.
All of the flights landed safely, and there were no injuries reported.
The FAA is currently investigating the incident.
Drones are becoming more of a problem for planes. Just over a week ago, a Delta pilot landing at JFK reported a drone off the right wing of the plane 1,700 feet up. That weekend, two other drone sightings were reported as well. The drone seen Sunday was even higher - between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in the sky. Flying an drone anywhere near a manned aircraft is unsafe an illegal, and may result in fines of up to $25,000 and criminal charges.
