Man arrested after great-grandmother killed, mother found bound in East Village apartment

Suspect allegedly kills great-grandmother, ties up his mother inside East Village apartment

EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police have made an arrest in the death of an elderly woman and the assault of the suspect's mother on Friday night.

Gary Bias, 23, of New York, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

Police first responded to a 911 call at 711 FDR Drive, the Lillian Wald Houses, around 5:35 p.m.

Once inside, officers found an 82-year-old Ella-Nae Bias with her wrists and ankles bound with tape inside the apartment unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gary Bias is Ella-Nae Bias' great-grandson.

A 39-year-old woman, Gary Bias' mother, was also bound at the location, but managed to free herself and call police. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital for her injuries.

Bias fled the scene in a car. Police found him in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he was taken into custody.
