Officer's body cam captures amazing water rescue in Norwalk

NORWALK, Connecticut (WABC) -- It was a dramatic rescue in Norwalk, Connecticut early Sunday morning.

Police say a driver lost control near the intersection of Main and Wall streets, tore through a small park, plowed through a metal fence, and then went over the embankment. He crash landed 15 feet below, upside down in the Norwalk River.

First responders wasted no time. They braved the freezing fast moving waters.

They found the driver still alive.

"It was excellent team work by both the fire department and the Norwalk Police Department. The officers selflessly entered that water, you'll see in the video, the water is rushing out, all the windows in the vehicle are broken out, so water was rushing into the vehicle," said Lt. Terry Blake, of the Norwalk Police Department.

One of the officer's body cams was rolling. It shows how quickly they and firefighters got to the driver and how they saved his life

"There's basically no lighting over there. They had to scale over a 15-foot wall to get down to the street level and then enter the water there, so again, it was really great work by all involved," Lt. Blake said.

The police are now investigating this accident to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The driver has not been charged. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
