STAMFORD, Conn. (WABC) -- Scammers posing as police or government agents are calling Stamford residents and telling them that they have missed jury duty and that they need to pay a fine or they will be immediately arrested, police say.

These scammers are instructing potential victims to pay the fine in the form of Green Dot cards, reported Stamford residents.

Police said this is a new version of an old scam. They want to remind residents that no police department or government agency will ever call you and ask you to pay a fine using Green Dot cards or ever allow you to make a payment in lieu of being arrested.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a government agency and you are skeptical of their credentials, you may contact the Stamford Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit at (203) 977-4407.
