MAMARONECK, Westchester County (WABC) -- A man is fighting for his life after he escaped from a moving vehicle on a New York highway Tuesday evening and was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

The bizarre incident happened just before 6 p.m. on I-95 in Mamaroneck.

Authorities say 24-year-old Mouhamed Cisse rolled out of a white U-Haul van that was travelling northbound on the highway. Police say he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

The investigation shut down part of I-95 for several hours, and authorities are now searching for the GMC U-Haul with Arizona plates and possible right front-end damage after it struck a Honda while swerving on the roadway.

The circumstances of the incident have not been released, though authorities said it is unclear if the victim exited on his own or was pushed.

State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information that would be helpful to this investigation to contact (914) 769-2600.
