NEW YORK (WABC) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said on Sunday the national teachers union deserves "a punch in the face."

In an interview with CNN, the Republican presidential candidate was asked about his long-standing take on how he handles bullies -- by punching them in the face. He was asked who deserves a punch in the face, and didn't hesitate in saying the national teachers union.

He said the organization does not promote better education for children.

"They're for greater membership, greater benefits, greater pay for their members," Christie said. "They are the single-most destructive force for public education in America."

On Monday, the American Federation of Teachers responded to Christie's comments, saying his comments are a threat.

Here's the statement issued by AFT President Randi Weingarten:

"Chris Christie has issues-from reneging on his promise to fix pensions to his state's fiscal standing facing near junk bond status. But the biggest issue is he's a bully and has anger management problems. That he would threaten to punch teachers in the face-mostly women seeking to help children meet their potential and achieve their dreams-promotes a culture of violence and underscores why he lacks the temperament and emotional skills to be president, or serve in any leadership capacity. It's a sad day in the life of our nation to see a candidate threaten violence to gain political favor."

Eyewitness News talked with two two teachers -- one from Orange, the other from Hawthorne -- about Christie's comment and they were furious.

"I wouldn't want my students acting like this in class. And I wouldn't want my own children behaving like this," said Pamela Fadden, who teaches algebra.

The teachers said they've fought with Christie in the past, and the punch comment was over the top.

"It's very inappropriate to say anyone would punch anybody in the face for whatever reason, that is not a solution," said Alexandra Protopapas, a social studies teacher.

Christie will likely take this message to Thursday's big debate, which includes the top 10 Republicans. Christie barely made the cut.

The teachers said they see a connection between Thursday's debate and Christie's comments.

I think he does like to stir controversy to get his name out here as much as possible because I think going West people don't know so much about Governor Chris Christie," Fadden said. "But also I think I wouldn't want him representing our country in peace talks!"
