Jerry Remy has lung cancer relapse, says under control

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jerry Remy has been diagnosed with a relapse of lung cancer that is "under control," the popular Boston Red Sox broadcaster announced Monday on his Twitter feed.

Remy, 64, plans to continue working as a color analyst on NESN's Red Sox telecasts this season, his 30th year in the broadcast booth. A longtime smoker, he was initially diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008 and suffered a relapse in 2013.

According to NESN, Remy will make a statement about his condition later Monday afternoon. He also is expected to stress the importance of periodic screenings and checkups.

Remy recently signed a multiyear contract extension with NESN that stipulated he would work 115 games this season. NESN president/CEO Sean McGrail called Remy "the cornerstone of our broadcast team."

News of Remy's relapse made its way through the Red Sox's training facility Monday, as pitchers and catchers reported to camp.

"It's tough to go through, absolutely," said ace lefty David Price, who noted that Remy usually arrives in the clubhouse before the players in order to prepare for a broadcast. "He's got all of our support. Hang in there."

Said Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski: "Jerry is very well-respected. He's been here a long time. You would travel in here as a visitor and know how well-respected he is in the community. The fans love him, the organization loves him, NESN loves him, so hopefully he's back with us soon."
