PARAMUS, N.J. (WABC) -- One man is dead and three others are in custody after an attempted robbery on Route 4 earlier Wednesday morning.

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, four people tried to rob a T-Mobile store on Route 4.

Paramus police officers responded to a burglar alarm at 255 Route 4 West in Paramus, where they found the rear door of the Jennifer Convertibles store pried open. Police found the four suspects in a 2015 gray Kia, which hit one of the police officers as they fled.

The driver, Miguel Reyes, 20, of New York, crashed into the center divider on Route 4, then fled across Route 4 on foot, according to the Bergen County Prodsecutor's Office. River Edge police officers captured him, and he was taken to to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 a.m.

The other suspects, 25-year-old Nico Vega, 21-year-old Josue Felix and 25-year-old Hector Felix, were arrested at the scene. Vega and Hector Felix are in custody, while Josue Felix is being treated at an area hospital for a hurt finger. Charges are pending.

Reyes' cause of death is unclear.

The smashed-in car with a bullet hole remained in the middle of Route 4 while police investigated.

Westbound Route 4 closed for about five hours. Rubbernecking caused delays in the eastbound lanes.

Police said they believe the thieves were planning to use the Jennifer store to gain access to the T-Mobile store.

One witness said he heard a sound that woke him up then he saw two people running across the highway.

Paramus police and Bergen County Police were on the scene, in addition to River Edge police.

The investigation is ongoing.
