AccuWeather Alert: Trees, wires down; Flooding after storms, wind wreak havoc
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Storms battered the Tri-State area Wednesday night into Thursday, with heavy downpours and wicked winds downing trees and power lines and leaving a mess to clean up in the aftermath.
The rain caused localized flooding and winds and continued at his heavies until about 2 a.m. Thursday.
N.J. Burkett reported on Long Island damage this afternoon:
Thousands of customers were without power at the height of the outages, with the most affected areas in northern Nassau County and in Huntington. The west side of Massapequa, which is part of Oyster Bay, was littered with downed trees and power lines, including one that came down on two cars on New Hampshire Avenue, setting them on fire.
Numerous trees crashed onto houses, including homes on Chicago Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue.

Thousands were also without power in New Jersey, Westchester, Rockland, New York City and Connecticut.
In Hillsborough, New Jersey, a section of Millstone River Road closed due to high water. Metro North New Haven Line customers traveling through Greenwich and Rye were also delayed due to wire damage in the area.

In Westchester, the winds knocked down a number of trees, and the damage was so bad in Bedford that schools were closed for the day.
