The railroad says two of Amtrak's four tracks along the route have been returned to service and that trains are moving at reduced speeds in and out of NY Penn Station.
Amtrak says continuing delays should be expected up and down the Northeast Corridor:
This incident has impacted trains operating from Washington Union Station (WAS) to Boston South Station (BOS). Customers traveling along the Northeast Corridor should expect delays of at least 30 minutes to 60 minutes. We will update you when the service is fully restored. We appreciate your patience.
Customers with reservations on affected trains will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day. Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
Service was originally expected to resume by 10am Sunday, an estimate that was later pushed back to noon.
The suspension and delays come on one of the busiest travel days of the year ahead of the Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa holidays.
