How much snow to expect this weekend in NYC, Tri-State area

NEW YORK (WABC) -- This post is no longer being updated. Please visit our winter storm blog for the very latest information.

A powerful coastal storm is expected to bring widespread impacts to the Tri-State area from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, with heavy snow, strong winds and hazardous travel likely.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for New York City and parts of the Tri-State area on Sunday into Monday.

Sunday: Storm Arrives and Intensifies

Sunday begins with patches of light rain or snow and a few slippery spots, but the steadier, more impactful weather holds off until later in the day. By Sunday afternoon, colder air moves in and snow becomes more consistent. Roads will start to deteriorate, especially south of I78 and across Long Island, where steadier bands develop first.

Sunday evening is when conditions quickly go downhill. Snow intensifies as the storm taps into Atlantic moisture, and the region enters the edge of a heavy snow band that continues to shift slightly with every model update. A small jog in the storm track could still change totals, but trends now clearly point to a higher-impact event.

Sunday Night Into Monday Morning: The Brunt of the Storm

The heaviest snow arrives Sunday night through early Monday, with periods of intense snowfall, reduced visibility, and wind gusts over 40 mph along the coast. Travel during this window will be very difficult to dangerous. Coastal flooding is also possible in vulnerable areas.

Snowfall Potential

4-8 inches across NYC, much of New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut
8-12 inches along the Jersey Shore and most of Long Island
2-4 inches north and west of the city

Forecast confidence is increasing, and a 6-inch or greater snowfall in New York City is now more likely.

Monday: Gradual Improvement
Snow remains heavy early Monday morning before tapering late morning into midday. Winds stay gusty as the storm pulls away, but conditions steadily improve for the afternoon commute.

AccuWeather Alerts remain in effect through Monday morning. Snowfall projections will continue to be updated as new data comes in.
