KENWOOD, Ohio (WABC) -- Everything seemed to go wrong for a pair of jewelry thieves in Ohio.

They had broken into a jewelry store, attempting to steal 26 diamond rings worth a combined $86,000.

In surveillance video, one thief is seen slashing his leg as he kicks in the glass door of the store.

The suspects tried to run down the stairwell but quickly realized it did not connect to the garage where their getaway car was parked. The stairs only went to the first floor.

So the pair hopped into an elevator, but once they hit the garage level, it got stuck. Detectives say they tried to stash the jewelry in the ceiling, but the plan didn't work as authorities arrived quickly.

The fire department was called to open the elevator and deputies arrested the two.
