NEW YORK (WABC) -- The blizzard of 2026 impacted millions across New York City and the Tri-State area on February 22-23, 2026.

The major storm that blanketed the region with snow, canceled flights, disrupted transit and downed power lines.

More than 30 inches of snow fell on parts of Long Island and New Jersey.

NYC declares official 'end of storm'; property owners must clear snow or face fines

The New York City Sanitation Department has declared an official "end of storm" for 4:30 p.m. Monday.

That means homeowners and property owners have until 8:30 p.m. to clear a four-foot path or face a fine.

Nyack business owners, residents begin digging out after major blizzard

For most of the day, the wind was whipping and the snow was coming in sideways as plows struggled to keep up with the blizzard in Rockland County.

The good news is that the storm has passed, but now residents and business owners have the difficult task of digging out.

Eyewitness News reporter CeFaan Kim is in Nyack with more on the clean-up underway.

Thousand of customers in the Rockaways without power

New York City has more than 6,000 customers without power, and more than half are in the Rockaways in Queens.

Tanya Rivero reports from Rockaway, Queens.

PSE&G are hard at work trying to get everyone's power back.

Eyewitness News reporter Tanya Rivero spoke with a worker a power plant, who said, "best case scenario is six more hours" before power is fully restored.

Across the entire borough, there are 4,400 customers without power as of Monday evening, and of those, the overwhelming majority are in the Rockaways, where almost 4,000 customers have no power right now.

However, progress has been made. In an update Monday night, PSE&G Long Island said that of the more than 42,000 customers on Long Island and the Rockaways impacted by the storm, they have restored service to more than 32,000 since 3 p.m. Sunday.

More than 70,000 New Yorkers have signed an online petition asking New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to switch to remote learning on Tuesday after a blizzard dumped as much as two feet of snow in part of the city on Monday.
