President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israel strikes attack targeting military and government sites, officials said.

Iranian state television confirmed that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those killed in Tehran on the first day of strikes. His son Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen on Sunday to succeed him.

Iran is responding to the operation with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional U.S. bases and multiple Gulf nations. Israel is also intensifying its long-running strike campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

No injuries from fire at US embassy in Kuwait

No injuries resulted from an incident that sparked a large fire at the U.S. embassy compound in Kuwait earlier Monday, according to a U.S. official.

The cause of the fire was thought to be an Iranian drone strike, a second official said, noting that the incident was still being investigated.

Staff at the embassy were ordered to return to their residences and shelter-in-place when the fire started, leaving few if any employees inside the main embassy building at the time, according to officials.

The embassy has canceled all appointments for U.S. visas and American Citizen Services until further notice, per a security alert, which adds that information on how American citizens in Kuwait may obtain an emergency passport for travel is forthcoming.
