NEW YORK (WABC) -- Mayor Zohran Mamdani is hitting the ground running as he works to fulfill campaign promises to the people of New York City.

The 34-year-old democratic socialist has already signed executive orders, announced more appointments to his administration and made historic announcements.

Last week the mayor announced a plan for universal child care for 2-year-olds in New York City, announced a plan to expand public bathroom access and even defended an official facing backlash for past social media posts.

Mamdani appoints Afua Atta-Mensah as Chief Equity Officer

Mamdani announced the appointment of Afua Atta-Mensah as Chief Equity Officer and Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice.

In this role, Atta-Mensah will coordinate the administration's work advancing racial equity across city agencies, including creating and publishing the Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan within the administration's first 100 days in office.

"Afua Atta-Mensah has dedicated her career to serving the New Yorkers who are so often forgotten in the halls of power. There is no one I trust more to advance racial equity across our work in City Hall," Mamdani said. "That starts with making good on the promise of a Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan within our first 100 days in office, and it will continue as our administration focuses on equity and racial justice throughout its work."

Mamdani takes dig at Adams while encouraging 3-K and Pre-k signups

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani took a jab at his predecessor, Eric Adams, as he encouraged parents to sign up for 3-K and Pre-K on Wednesday.

"The past administration sought to not only cut funding for the program, but also to cut outreach and advertising about early childhood education as well," he said. "The consequences were stark. Thousands of empty seats, especially in the parts of the city with higher numbers of immigrant and low income families who stood to benefit the most."
