1 killed, 2 injured in South Plainfield house fire

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, New Jersey (WABC) -- Fire tore through a South Plainfield home early Wednesday, killing one person and injuring two others.

Neighbors watched in horror as one person had to jump from a window to escape the deadly fire.

"They must have had 3 fire trucks here. They extended the ladder, next thing, boom, fire came through the house," a witness said.

Sarge who was home across the street from where the fire consumed a majority of a house said three people were inside when firefighters rushed to the scene.

"I looked again I said what the heck. Flames were coming from the back of the house and it just kept spreading. I said oh my God," Sarge said.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office one man did not make it out of the house and died.

Another person was dragged out of the home and the other jumped from a second-story window, both suppered minor injuries, officials said.

The prosecutor's office has determined there is nothing suspicious about the fire.

The Fire Marshal's Office is still determining the cause of the fire.

A neighbor said a family has lived in the home for decades.
