2 shot in Newark Friday afternoon

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating two fatal shootings in Newark on Friday.

At 2:40 p.m., police responded to the 100 block of Muhammad Ali Ave., in Newark where they found Kareem Jones, 33, of Irvington, N.J., who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital around 5 p.m.

In a separate incident, police responded to the 200 block of South Eighth Street around 5 p.m. where they found Jermaine Gamble, 20, of Newark, unresponsive in the street as well as a woman who had been shot. Both victims were transported to University Hospital, where the Gamble was pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m. The female victim was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

There is no indication that the incidents are related, according to Thomas S. Fennelly, chief assistant prosecutor.
