Search for driver who fatally struck woman in hit-and-run in Manhattan

MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a pedestrian from Queens before fleeing the scene in Midtown East on Wednesday morning.

The 69-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle on Second Avenue at East 57th Street just before 4:30 a.m.

Police say she was walking near the bike lane when she was struck and killed.

Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the driver of a black SUV slow down, but never stop, before turning left on East 57th Street.

The same video shows a second SUV slow down and stop. The driver put their hazard lights on before two people got out to try and help the victim.

The victim was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"She was probably on her way to work or just doing something good and a bad thing happened unfortunately and it's upsetting," said resident Erica Cohen.

Siva Henderson said she has seen multiple recent crash scenes from her apartment window.

"It's crazy because this is the second time I think in less than two months someone was just hit on a bike also super early in the morning," Henderson said.

The crash on Wednesday morning is the second deadly hit and run on the East Side in less than a week.

Last Friday morning, a 44-year-old man was struck and killed two blocks away on Lexington Avenue near East 61st Street. That driver later turned himself in.

As police search for the driver in Wednesday's incident, officials hope multiple cameras in the area will get a license plate to help track down the driver.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
