LAURENCE HARBOR, New Jersey (WABC) -- It was a nightmare scenario for a Laurence Harbor, New Jersey family. Just imagine, it's 2 in the morning, and they're awakened by the sound of screeching tires and the boom of a truck hitting their property.
Luckily, everyone is safe, but when it came to fixing the damage, the homeowner began to feel like the truck's auto insurance wasn't going to repair the damage.
"All I know is he was here and boom, boom, boom," Inshira Oseghale said.
That boom began with the driver of a truck, that police say was asleep at the wheel when he sailed right through a Highway 35 intersection in Laurence Harbor, and straight into a back yard.
"We're in the bed and I hear 'eeeerrrrrrr!' Oh, my God, it's going to be an accident and a loud BOOM. I look out my window. I don't see anything in the window. So, I walk around. I couldn't believe what I saw," Oseghale said.
The truck took out her fence on two sides and only stopped by crashing into her neighbor's car.
"Her car is damaged, totaled. She couldn't believe what she saw," Oseghale said.
Oseghale and her husband had saved for years, closing on their first home, just months before the accident
"When you saw your property damage and you just bought your first house, what did you think?" 7 On Your Side's Nina Pineda asked.
"I just couldn't believe it. Unbelievable," Oseghale said.
The total cost to replace the damaged fence: $5,320.
She thought the truck's insurance, AAA, would take care of the repairs, but in a letter, it recommended Inshira contact her own insurance, which she did not want to do.
"Because then ultimately, just like car insurance, my homeowner's insurance will go up. And I'm like, why would I do that if it wasn't my fault?" She said.
Yet she was on the hook to shell out for a new fence they could not afford.
"I just needed to fight. I saw what you do for other people, so I'm like, maybe they can help me as well," Oseghale said.
7 On Your Side reached out to AAA and within four days, a home run -- a check for $5,320 and the fence got fixed.
The result, new fence panels, new gates and a whole new look to Inshira's backyard!
In a statement to 7 On Your Side, AAA External Affairs representative, Jason Willett, said, "While privacy polices prevent us from sharing detailed customer or claims information, we are pleased to note that this situation was resolved prior to the publication of this story.
