AARP takes over NYC to celebrate social security's 90th anniversary

TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A trip to Times Square on Thursday, marked a milestone for an All-American program.

AARP chartered a double-decker bus to celebrate 90 years of social security.

Nearly 70 million Americans currently collect social security.

That includes more than 3.75 million people in New York State.

AARP is fighting to make sure the program remains funded.

"85% of Americans 50-plus believe that social security is important and is a critical issue. They're worried about the solvency of social security and for us today, it's an opportunity to bring attention to all of that," said Myechia Minter-Jordan of AARP.

AARP says almost 40% of New York State residents over the age of 65 rely on social security for at least half their income.
