Suspected case of botulism reported in baby in New York tied to ByHeart infant formula recall
NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) -- Nassau County officials announced the first suspected case of a baby in New York sickened by formula involved in a nationwide recall.
Preliminary tests showed that ByHeart brand powdered baby formula contained the type of bacteria that produces the toxin linked to a botulism outbreak.
Cases have been reported across multiple states.
While no cases have been confirmed in New York State, a suspected case has been reported in an infant, under 1 years old, in Nassau County, who consumed the impacted product.
The infant is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
Since August, the CDC says they have received reports of 13 cases of infant botulism in 10 states, all involving infants who consumed ByHeart brand powdered infant formula.
The confirmed cases occurred in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington.
