EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are investigating after an employee of a deli was stabbed to death in Brooklyn on Friday afternoon.
Officers responded to 684 Hegeman Ave. just after 3 p.m. where they encountered an employee, in his 30s, with multiple stab wounds to his stomach.
The victim, identified as 33-year-old Diego Sandoval-Nava, was taken to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in critical condition but was later pronounced dead, police said.
Police said he lived in an apartment above the deli.
Police sources say this is being investigated as an unprovoked attack.
They say a male entered the store, agitated for an unknown reason, was screaming and then left. A few minutes later, he returns and attempts to get behind the counter, police said.
Police said Sandoval-Nava tried to stop him and was stabbed in the stomach several times by the suspect.
The suspect fled and police described him as roughly 190 pounds and 5'10 with braided hair.
No arrests have been made.
