11-year-old boy killed, 17-year-old brother critically injured in Perth Amboy house fire
PERTH AMBOY, New Jersey (WABC) -- An 11-year-old child was killed and several others were injured in a house fire in Perth Amboy on Friday morning.
The fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. at a residence on Chauncey Street.
First responders arrived within minutes and worked to get about 24 people out of the building.
Two individuals suffered burn injuries and were taken by helicopter to a burn center for treatment.
Officials said later Friday that one juvenile died as a result of the fire. His 17-year-old brother was critically injured.
An older adult male was also seriously injured. Officials say they may all be related.
"This is a devastating loss for a family and for our community," said Mayor Helmin J. Caba. "On behalf of the City of Perth Amboy, I extend my deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. I want to thank our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and mutual aid partners who responded to the scene and worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances. As we continue to learn more, I ask our community to keep the family in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this painful time."
The Red Cross is assisting residents in finding temporary housing.
The cause and circumstances of the fire are under investigation.
