Woman arrested after mother, 5-year-old child struck by hit-and-run driver in Fair Lawn
FAIR LAWN, New Jersey (WABC) -- A woman is under arrest after a 47-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son were struck by a hit-and-run driver in Fair Lawn on Tuesday morning.
Bergen County authorities say it happened at Broadway and Fair Lawn Parkway around 6:30 a.m.
Authorities announced Tuesday afternoon that 67-year-old Maritza Salazar-Perez was arrested in connection with the crime in a neighboring town.
Police say she left the scene after striking the woman and her child.
The victims were taken to Hackensack Hospital. The child suffered severe head injuries, and the mother suffered minor injuries, according to police.
Officials allege that Salazar-Perez, who lives in Fair Lawn, was making a left turn from 32nd Street to Broadway when she struck the victims who were crossing Broadway in the crosswalk.
She is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim and various motor vehicle offenses.
She was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending her first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
Residents say crossing the street at that location can be difficult.
"Crazy, you have to look twice, three times to make sure that nobody is speeding because that's one thing that people like to do, try to beat that red light, and especially trying to get in here at Dunkin Donuts," said Marryellen Posdon, a Fair Lawn resident.
The investigation is being overseen by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the Fair Lawn Police Department.
