FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore | Full interview

NEW YORK (WABC) -- There are some new faces in some of New York City's biggest jobs. We have a new mayor. We also have a new fire commissioner.

Eyewitness News anchor Bill Ritter recently had the chance to sit down with the new FDNY Commissioner, Lillian Bonsignore. While she's been on the job just about a month now, she's no newcomer to the department.

Bonsignore served more than 30 years with the FDNY, rising through the ranks to become chief of EMS in 2019, just before COVID-19 struck. She led the Emergency Medical Service for New York through the pandemic and then retired in 2022.

So returning to the FDNY, now as commissioner, is a role she's uniquely qualified to fill.

"I think I bring something to this role that other people maybe haven't been able to because of my experience with EMS. I think having stood beside the folks that are doing the jobs at the same scenes - and I've done this for three decades - so I can look at EMS and fire as two parts of the same heart. But in this role, I'm not here to fight a fire or start an IV. I'm here to support the hands that do that," Bonsignore said.

Watch the full interview in the player above, and tune in this Saturday, February 7th, at 7:00 p.m., for Operation 7: Save a Life.

ABC7's annual fire safety special is hosted by Bill Ritter.
