The FDNY and NYPD battled on Saturday during the inaugural Staten Island Hot Dog Eating contest.
The fire was reported at 10:15 p.m. on the 17th floor of a 21-story residential building at 212 E. Broadway, between Jefferson and Clinton streets.
The fire started in the basement of one home on Briggs Avenue just after 8 a.m. on Thursday and spread to another.
A civilian and firefighter suffered minor injuries after a fire tore through three multi-family homes in Woodhaven, Queens on Tuesday.
Five surrounding buildings near 235 E. 42nd St. remain evacuated, and East 43rd Street remains closed out of an abundance of caution as engineers and emergency crews continue reinforcing the building.
"If anything, we're lucky it happened now instead of three years from now, when there are thousands of people living in the building."
