Gov. Sherrill announces updates on NJ Transit services, improvements

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- It's been a month and a half since New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill signed an executive order demanding NJ Transit improve the experience for customers.

Now the agency has to show what, if any, progress it's making.

The governor released NJ Transit's Rapid Action Plan to enhance the experience for customers.

"No one wants to ride home on a dirty bus. No one wants to feel unsafe on their train. And no one wants to use an outdated and confusing app that makes it impossible to plan your trip. By prioritizing accessibility, safety, cleaner vehicles and facilities, and upgraded digital technology, this plan addresses the needs of everyone who uses the system," Gov. Sherrill said.

The plan includes investments in cleaner vehicles and upgraded stations, NJT LiveView to provide real-time GPS tracking of train and light rail service, enhanced safety initiatives through a new Real Time Crime Center, and the debut of a redesigned NJ Transit mobile app.

"NJ TRANSIT is firmly committed to improving the day-to-day experience of every customer served, and the Rapid Action Plan represents a clear foundation for our commitment," said NJDOT Commissioner and NJ Transit Chair Priya Jain.

"The Rapid Action Plan reflects a systemwide commitment to all NJ TRANSIT customers. We appreciate Governor Sherrill's clear focus on delivering immediate improvements that customers can see and feel," said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri.

Sherrill said no additional money will be appropriated from the state during the 2027 Budget cycle to fund these improvements. NJ Transit will fund the cost of this plan using its existing budget.

Passengers will be able to use the new mobile app to buy tickets to the FIFA games starting Tuesday night which will cost $105 per trip. Those tickets will be non-transferable, but transit officials say FIFA fans should not consider walking to the matches.
