30-year-old man shot in the leg after 2 suspects open fire in Harlem; 1 teen in custody

HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- An investigation is underway into a shooting in Harlem that left one man injured on Monday.

The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. NYPD officials say there were two people, one on a kick scooter and another on a Citi Bike, firing guns on Lenox Avenue between 114th and 115th streets.

One of the two suspects then shot a 30-year-old man in the upper right thigh, although it's not yet clear if he was the intended target.

Police say the armed suspect on the Citi Bike fled on the bike, while the other suspect ditched their scooter and ran.

Officers posted on Lenox saw the suspect who ditched the scooter and tried to stop him. Officials say that when the suspect refused to put his weapon down, that's when one cop fired one bullet and missed.

Witnesses at a restaurant on Lenox Avenue heard the initially shots from the suspects three blocks north, then saw the confrontation between officers and the suspect.

"We don't know where those bullets are going, and that's the problem," said witness Trice Babii Thompson.

Police say the suspect, later identified as a 15-year-old boy, quickly surrendered after the officer fired the shot in his direction.

The teen had a gun on him that was recovered. He was not injured.

As for the victim, Citizen App video showed police officers applying a tourniquet to his wounded leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition.

Police are still looking for the other suspect who open fired and took off on a Citi Bike.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that they are glad the officers were posted in the area but asked why this still happened right in front of them.

"It's really scary and makes people tired. Tired, you know," said neighbor Donna Robinson. "Tired of coming outside."

The investigation is ongoing.
