New York City prepares for heavy rain as flood threat looms Monday
Heavier downpours could produce localized flooding, potentially affecting the Monday's commute and continuing into the afternoon.
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- New York City is urging residents to prepare for periods of heavy rain and possible flooding, with forecasters warning that the greatest risk for disruptive weather could arrive overnight Sunday and into Monday's morning commute.
The NYC Emergency Management Department said the city could see between 0.60 and 1 inch of rain through Tuesday, with locally higher amounts possible. Officials warned that periods of heavy rain could flood streets, highways, underpasses and basements.
According to the AccuWeather forecast, the rain arrives late Sunday night into Monday, when repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms may move over the same locations. If the heaviest rain targets highly urbanized areas, localized flooding could develop and impact the Monday morning commute.
Because of the flooding potential, Monday has been designated an AccuWeather Alert Day. The day is not expected to be a complete washout. Temperatures are expected to top out near 81 degrees with high humidity.
According to the city's Emergency Management Department, agencies have cleaned catch basins and cleared street litter ahead of the storm system. Emergency officials are advising New Yorkers to limit travel during severe weather, avoid driving or walking through flooded roadways and seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms. Residents in basement apartments are urged to move to higher floors if flooding develops.
