MONTAUK, Long Island (WABC) -- A humpback whale washed up on the beach in Montauk on Long Island early Friday morning.
The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said the whale was originally seen floating several miles offshore by a fisherman late Thursday night, who notified authorities upon the discovery.
The 40-foot adult whale washed up in the Ditch Plains section around 6:30 a.m.

AMCS is working with local authorities to determine how much access they can get to the whale, which is severely decomposed. They say that could make it difficult to determine the cause of death.
A necropsy will be performed on the adult whale and officials say they are working out the logistics of getting the equipment down to the beach to do that.
They plan on beginning it Saturday morning.
The whale is currently surrounded by caution tape to protect the public from getting too close.
