Meet Jack Ciattarelli, Republican candidate for NJ governor

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Wednesday is the final debate in the race for New Jersey Governor.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli are locked in a tight race that has gained national attention.

Ahead of the debate, Eyewitness News is taking a look at the man who four years ago nearly defeated Governor Phil Murphy, and vowed during his concession speech that he would be back.

Candidate Jack Ciattarelli wowed supporters deep in Ocean County on Tuesday, less than a month before Election day.

He is working to guarantee they show up at the polls.

"People are frustrated up and down the state because of the affordability crisis, property taxes, their electric bills, housing, childcare if you have small kids, people are angry about these things. If you're angry, you gotta do something about it. Vote," Ciattarelli said.

For 10 years now, Ciattarelli has had his eye on the Governor's seat.

He's a businessman who also spent years representing constituents on the state level in Trenton.

One of his primary platforms is cutting tax burdens in the state, making it easier for older residents to stay and making the state more attractive for young people to plant roots.

He outlined part of his plan last month in the first debate against his Democratic opponent, Mikie Sherrill.

"How about we make all retirement income tax free, how about we freeze property taxes once you hit age 70? How about we make the first two years of income post high school, post college tax free so young people can get a start?" Ciattarelli said.

At a rally last night at a Cuban restaurant in Jersey City he belted out just a few of his day one decrees should he win the seat.

He said regarding the immigration issue, "On day one and executive order one on day on, no town or city will be a sancuary city."

He said regarding pulling the state out of a green energy agreement that he says has lead to higher energy costs for residents, "There will be no wind farms off our Jersey Shore, I'll tell you right now. We'll lower electricity bills on day one by pulling out of REGI."

And he promised to reform education by remodeling how state funds are allocated to school districts, making it easier for Charter schools to have access to those funds.

"The fact that we slipped from 2 to 12 on national report cards says something. We need to do what places like Mississippi and Louisiana have done, a high-impact curriculum," he said.

Ciattarelli believes New Jersey is ready for change.

Sherrill accused Ciattarelli of being in lock step with President Trump, a partnership she says New Jersey cannot afford.

"She's not from New Jersey so I have a really simple idea, how about we elect the Jersey guy?" Ciattarelli said.
