Jets WR Cooper, safety Fitzpatrick both hurt against Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Omar Cooper Jr.'s NFL debut for the New York Jets lasted only four offensive plays.

The rookie wide receiver, one of three first-round picks by the Jets, was sidelined by an ankle injury in the first quarter of New York's 23-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.

Cooper set up a touchdown with a catch-and-run for 30 yards -- his next-to-last play, as it turned out. The touchdown came on the opening possession; they scored on their first possession only once last season.

The Jets suffered another potentially significant injury in the first quarter.

Former All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, one of their marquee additions in the offseason, lasted only six plays before leaving with a strained left groin.

A long-term injury to Fitzpatrick would be a blow to an already suspect secondary. Looking for playmaking ability and leadership, the Jets acquired Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins in a March trade, then signed him to a three-year, $40 million contract.

Fitzpatrick was replaced by former starter Andre Cisco.

The Jets' secondary absorbed another hit in the second quarter, as nickelback Jarvis Brownlee Jr., a former Titan, left with a calf injury, however, he returned in the second half. Their other nickel, rookieD'Angelo Ponds, was inactive. Stretched thin, they moved safety Dane Belton to the slot while Brownlee was out.
