TENAFLY, New Jersey (WABC) -- This week, Jews around the world mark two years since the October 7 attacks at the hands of Hamas. It comes as Israel and Hamas prepare for talks to try to end the war in Gaza and release the remaining Israeli hostages.
The White House says President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner will be part of the U.S. team at those talks which begin Monday in Egypt.
At the JCC in Tenafly, New Jersey they are getting ready for the somber event as the two-year anniversary approaches.
Forty eight hostages being held in Gaza still have not been released. Of them, only 20 are believed to be alive.
In Central Park there was a march to focus on those still in captivity, calling for all the bodies to be returned home.
Also on the Upper West Side, there was a silent processional for the Palestinian children in Gaza who have been killed in the conflict. This was organized by a group called NYC Jewish Elders.
Clearly, no one is safe in wartime, which only amplifies the calls for a ceasefire. There is a peace deal in the works, and it remains to be seen if all sides agree to the conditions and immediate release of the victims.
Edan Alexander from Tenafly was held captive for 584 days. His parents attended the JCC on Sunday to rally for the rest of the hostages.
"It still feels like Passover to me because every day I wake up and say 'let my people go!'" said Jason Shames, President and CEO of Jewish Federal of Northern NJ.
"We have to get them home as soon as possible," said Englewood resident Michael New.
