How to save money when you are shopping for Halloween

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Mummies, zombies and ghosts won't be the only things scaring you this Halloween because these spooky season prices are frightening.

Americans are projected by the National Retail Federation to spend a record $13 billion on Halloween this year and nearly $4 billion on treats alone.

Much of those seasonal items like costumes and decorations are imported from China and thus what's in the stores got hit with tariffs.

But the costs of candy is also rising especially chocolate. Due to extreme weather is West Africa and inflation, the price of cocoa has doubled since the beginning of 2024.

Don't get spooked though, because there are ways to save on sweets.

If you're running out drug stores and grocery stores will be more expensive, try to buy in bulk so you can get those discounted prices.

According to CashNetUSA, branded candy is 30% percent cheaper at Walmart compared to the national average, and 20% cheaper at Target.

If you're a Costco shopper, you can get 5.6 pounds of Kirkland sweets for just $24.

As for costumes, if you've ever made the run to Spirit Halloween, get your wallet ready.

The bagged costumes are expensive and sometimes they don't last the night, you are better off DIYing your costume.

A renaissance era fair maiden will run you $49 on amazon and even more on etsy - $108.

At Brooklyn Housing Works the green dress is only $10.

Second hand and thrift stores are your go-to for all of those Halloween party costume elements.

Sparkly shoes, glittery dresses, costume accessories, with a little creativity. Pulling an entire outfit together is a snap and will save you a lot of money.

When you shop at Housing Works you are supporting individuals in our community who are homeless or HIV positive, it's a win-win!

Check for a thrift store near you like Goodwill or Salvation Army. They all take donations and then pass along sales to great causes.

A lot of churches will also have rummage sales.
