EAST ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) -- One runway at LaGuardia Airport closed for a sinkhole will remain closed for at least one more day Friday.

Port Authority officials say crews have been conducting around-the-clock inspections of the runway and have identified some areas of concern, forcing it to remain closed until Saturday morning.

One of LaGuardia Airport's two runways is still marked with an "X" Friday morning after a sinkhole forced authorities to shut it down Wednesday.

The closure has prompted major delays and cancellations.

Port Authority officials say they will continue to comb through every inch of the affected area Friday to ensure it is safe. Crews have already made proactive repairs over the past 24 hours.

Officials say the goal is to complete all inspections and repairs by Saturday morning and reopen the runway shortly after.

"Our staff discovered, as part of their routine inspections, the sinkhole. We are continuing to use ground-penetrating radar and coring samples to find any additional voids," said Kathryn Garcia, Executive Director of the Port Authority.

The Port Authority has set a goal of 6 a.m. Saturday to complete inspections and repairs.

For now, flights will continue to be impacted due to the runway closure.

Travelers are urged to check with their airline for updated flight statuses before heading to the airport.
