LaGuardia runway closed by sinkhole reopens

EAST ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) -- A runway at LaGuardia Airport that had been closed since Wednesday due to a large sinkhole, has now reopened following the completion of repairs and inspections on Friday.

The Port Authority says runway 4/22 has now reopened, but the cause of the sinkhole remains under investigation.

"Following a thorough inspection of LaGuardia's airfield pavement using ground-penetrating radar, areas of concern were identified and proactively repaired," LaGuardia Airport said in a statement. "Those repairs are now complete, and Runway 4/22 has been reopened."

The airport said travelers should expect residual delays, and are encouraged to check their flight status with their airline.

There were reports that an ongoing fuel line project at LaGuardia is being investigated as a possible cause of the sinkhole.

Frustrated flyers endured hundreds of delayed or canceled flights since the sinkhole was discovered Wednesday.

The Port Authority had set a goal of 6 a.m. Saturday to complete inspections and repairs amid the busy Memorial Day weekend travel rush.
