Man sentenced for killing 4 homeless men in Chinatown

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A man convicted in the brutal murders of four homeless men on the streets of Chinatown was sentenced Thursday to 40 years-to-life in prison.

Randy Santos was convicted by a jury in February of beating the four men as they slept during a 2019 rampage.

Randy Santos was convicted on four counts of first-degree murder in February, accused of attacking his victims at random with a 15-pound metal pipe.

Santos' lawyers argued that he suffers from schizophrenia and is too mentally ill to be held criminally responsible.

"The chilling murders committed by Randy Santos shook New York City," said District Attorney Bragg in prepared remarks. "He displayed an appalling disregard for the lives of his victims, who were completely defenseless and unable to protect themselves. Unhoused individuals deserve the same level of safety as anyone else, and I hope the resolution of this case serves as a reminder of the work that remains in protecting and supporting our most vulnerable residents."
