LINDENHURST, Long Island (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after a Nassau County Highway Patrol officer on a motorcycle was seriously injured in a crash with a truck during a funeral procession.
It happened Monday around 11:30 a.m. on North Wellwood Avenue at Jerome Street as Nassau officers led the funeral procession for a relative of a Nassau County police officer.
After leaving Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, Nassau County Police Highway Patrol Officer Michael Hyland was driving a 2020 Harley Davidson as part of a funeral procession when he collided with a 2020 Toyota Tundra driven by Jeffrey Geller.
The 53-year-old officer was rushed to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of serious physical injuries. He remains at the hospital in critical condition.
Geller, 61, was not injured.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the crash were not yet known.
Multiple neighbors complained about the intersection on North Wellwood Avenue.
"Most of the time people race through here and they start to slows down to get down that block, and the people on this side continue on and lots of times there are crashes right here," a neighbor named Harold said.
Investigators from both Nassau and Suffolk county remained on the scene to figure out exactly how the crash happened.
