NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York drivers who have racked up 16 or more speed camera violations in a year will now need to install a speed-limiting device in their car.

That device basically uses GPS technology to track speed limits and prevent drivers from speeding.

If drivers ignore the order to install the device, they'll be hit with a fine ranging from $1500 to $2500. If no device is installed by 45 days after the deadline, the driver's car registration could be suspended.

If anyone tampers with the device, they could face fines and even a oneyear registration suspension and extra time with the limiter on their car.

"This year we're cracking down and making our roads safer, going after New York's so-called super speeders -- drivers who rack up 16 or more speed camera tickets in a year. They will be now required to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles," said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

This 'super speeder' program gained popularity after a terrible car accident in Brooklyn last year.

Miriam Yarimi ran a red light on Ocean Parkway, hitting a family trying to cross a street.

Natasha Saada and her children, 5-year-old Deborah and 8-year-old Diana, were killed in the impact. Her four-year-old son was left in critical condition.

Prosecutors also say Yarimi was a frequent violator of both speed laws and red light laws.

"New York is putting these super speeders on notice. You will not flout our laws, and you will not endanger children, pedestrians and other drivers who deserve to feel safe on our highways," Hochul said.
