Family blames snow banks on side of road for loved one's death in Newark
NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A devastated family in Newark is blaming the snow banks on the side of the road for the death of their loved one.
Tyree Peterson, 34, was struck and killed by a car as he was trying to catch a bus on Saturday.
It happened while he was trying to cross the busy corner of Clinton Avenue and Thomas Street.
His family says he couldn't safely cross the street because the snow piles were too high.
His mother, who did not want to be identified, says the city did not do its job.
"They did a messed up job because they're still making it hard for people to cross the street," she said.
Peterson's mother took pictures of the snow piles a day after the crash.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and so far it is being considered an accident, but his family is devastated.
"Tyree is smart, vibrant, he helps people, he likes playing with kids, he treats them like they're his," his mother said.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the funeral expenses.
They strongly feel that if the snow had been cleaned up before Saturday's accident, Peterson would have been able to move out of the way of the car and would be alive today.
