NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- For nearly half a century, they've been a beacon of light and champions of love and acceptance.
"Our goals are to be positive advocates for the LGBTQ community," Rashad Chambers, a member from the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, said. "We have always been singing and fighting in the trenches in New York City and beyond."
There are roughly 300 members of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus, and they're singers of all gender identities and expressions. Their manta is to chase joy.
"The way that we find joy is by singing in harmony, by singing together, by creating a meaningful, magical, musical moment," chorus member John Atoriano said.
The members come from all over our area, have traveled the world performing both free and ticketed events.
On Sunday, once again, the Chorus will take part in New York City's Pride March along 5th Avenue. This year's theme is "For All of Us."
"If we stop marching, then they can walk all over us," Atoriano said. "Even when we get pushed back six steps, we can still have the power together collectively to march forward 10 steps."
Stepping things up this season is a high point.
Eyewitness News dropped in on rehearsal for a concert, believed to be one of the only queer celebrations during Juneteenth. It is an important tribute to the organization's Black members.
"When we sing together, we are collectively co-signing each other's idea about what we can do together, what humanity can do together," Atoriano said.
And it's all in the pursuit of equality.
"We are not just in Chelsea, we are not just in Hell's Kitchen, we are everywhere," Atoriano said. "I want us to spread our entire organization, our wings around the entire city."
