Fire impacts train service from Jamaica to Penn Station

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A fire on the tracks at Penn Station is causing major disruptions for commuters on Thursday afternoon.

Crews responded to a call of fire on the tracks on 31st Street between 7th and 8th avenues just before 11:30 a.m.

As a result, LIRR service is temporarily suspended between Jamaica and Penn Station.

All westbound trains to Penn Station will terminate at Jamaica and LIRR is diverting trains to Grand Central Madison.

NJ Transit is diverting Midtown Direct trains to cut down on the number of trains coming into Penn Station. This is in response to the fire department activity, not to the actual fire.

Amtrak temporarily suspended service into Penn Station but train service resumed around 1:30 p.m. However, delays of up to an hour should be expected for the rest of the day due to congestion.
